before & after: painted dresser

One of my first painted furniture projects was this dresser that I found on Craigslist for $40.  At first, I was a little hesitant to go to a random stranger's house to buy a dresser so I enlisted my husband to contact the seller and go with me to pick it up.  I'm glad I did because the dresser was solid wood and quite heavy!

Getting the piece ready to paint just involved taking off the hardware, sanding, and priming.  Young House Love and Centsational Girl have great tutorials on painting furniture {here} and {here} respectively.  I used Zinsser primer, Behr paint in Slate Blue, and Minwax polyurethane (two coats of each with drying time in between).

Here is a picture of the dresser after it was painted.  At first the dresser went in our guest bedroom but after having a shortage of drawer space, it was moved to our bedroom (seriously...how many pairs of socks and undershirts does one man need?!?!?).

When I moved the dresser to the master bedroom, I decided I wanted to update the piece with some new hardware.  I chose these silver bin cup drawer pulls from Home Depot.

If you are comfortable painting over the wood, paint and new hardware is a great and inexpensive way to update an outdated piece of furniture.  Since the walls in our bedroom are tan, this piece now adds a nice pop of color to the room.
