before & after: director chairs

A few weeks ago, I picked up these two director chairs at Goodwill for $5 a piece.  From a distance, the pair didn't look too too shabby.

But if you look closer, they were pretty sad looking and quite dirty.  Also, when I pulled off the canvas, I realized that it was originally a royal blue color and had just faded over the years to a sea foam green.

The first thing I did was remove the canvas from the chairs so I could clean the frames.  Removing the canvas from these chairs is actually pretty easy.  I followed this great tutorial {here} on how to remove the canvas.  Once the canvas was off and after some serious scrubbing, the frames looked pretty good so I was able to avoid having to refinish them.  For the hardware, I scrubbed the side hinges with Brasso polish and sprayed with Rustoleum metallic silver spray for problem areas.  Despite being dirty, the canvas was still in good condition.  Therefore, instead of buying new canvas, I decided to just run the four pieces through the washing machine and then dye them a dark gray color using RIT dye in black.

Here is what the chairs look like now...

And a close-up...

And a quick comparison...

As I mentioned {here}, I am helping a friend decorate his condo so the plan is to use these as extra seating.  I'll be sure to share pictures once it's all done!
